Kate Mayer is an educator and the co-founder of Everyone Reads PA (ERPA) and The Reading League PA (TRLPA). Kate’s Science of Reading (SOR) consulting and advocacy work was born out of her experience as an educator and the mother of five children, 4 with language-based learning differences. Kate realized that she was missing something very critical regarding literacy instruction when her first child struggled to learn to read despite being intelligent and being immersed in a literacy rich environment that was modeled after what she learned in her teacher education program. The several years, emotionally fraught journey that Kate took to discover how to help her child left her with a deep sense of guilt. Although she was a trained educator, she was unable to help her child and the life-long impact of delayed intervention was significant. Once Kate immersed herself in the SOR, she discovered that there was a solution that would help educators and families teach all kids to read without the emotional impact her family experienced. ERTE began to bring the SOR to their school district.
Two years later, Kate and her partners established Everyone Reads PA to bring The Reading League PA to Pennsylvania to broaden the mission of bringing evidence aligned instruction to all families and educators in PA. Kate has worked with many organizations as a literacy specialist including AIM Institute, the Upper Main Line YMCA and Earlybird Education. She also provides literacy coaching to families and educators through ERPA’s literacy advocacy program. ERPA is working daily to support their mission - All Students Reading to the best of their potential with as little emotional impact as possible through their advocacy, screening and educational programs.
